With Rashaad Penny out, Kenneth Walker is ‘ready to roll’ for the Seahawks

Two of the primary reasons Seattle used the 41st pick in the 2022 NFL draft Kenneth Walker III was on display in the team’s 39-32 loss to New Orleans on Sunday.

Reason #1: insurance.

At the time of the selection, the Seahawks were uncertain about the future of Chris Carson, which ultimately was forced to medically retire due to a neck injury. Carson’s primary backup, Rashad Penny, has had well-documented durability issues. Drafting Walker was about having a viable option if Carson had to retire and Penny had to miss any time during the season.

Early in the third quarter Sunday, Penny suffered a leg/ankle injury on a 6-yard carry. He left the game with 54 yards on eight attempts and did not return. For the rest of the game, the Seahawks would be without their home run hitting running back.

Reason No. 2 for drafting Walker?

He is also a home run hitter.

Walker finished the game with eight carries for a career-high 88 yards and the first rushing touchdown of his young career. On that touchdown run, Walker caught a pass on second-and-1 from the 31-yard line midway through the fourth quarter. The offensive line flowed to the left and Walker followed suit before cutting back around the block of the rookie right tackle Abraham Lucas to reach the second level. Recognizing
