HBO Max has announced this Doom Patrol Season 4 premieres with two new episodes on December 8, which means the show will indeed not cancelled as other recent DC projects have been. A new episode premieres every week until January 5. A preview of the upcoming season was released online, featuring singing and dancing aliens and some of everyone’s favorite characters.
According to Deadline, Doom Patrol season 4 begins when the team travels to the future and discovers “an unwelcome surprise.” The fate of the world hangs in the balance as the team faces new challenges and their “imminent demise”. The CW’s Greg Berlanti is once again producing the show along with Geoff Johns, Chris Dingess and showrunner Jeremy Carver.
There was a time when Doom Patrol season 4 seemed more like a dream. We reported through our reliable and documented sources that many acclaimed DC shows, such as Titans and the animated one Harley Quinn series, was on the chopping block at Warner Bros. Discovery. This was after the sudden cancellation of Batgirl film that was originally supposed to be released on HBO Max, before the new CEO of Warner Bros. Discovery, David Zaslav, canceled the project.
Doom Patrol season 4 also seemed like an unlikely possibility. However, the Season 4 news means the show will remain on the streamer for now. In addition to the December 8 premiere, it was announced that six more episodes from the season will air in 2023.
Doom Patrol season 4 returns Brendan Fraser as Clift Steel, aka Robotman. Fraser has been on a bit of a comeback in Hollywood, appearing in Darren Aronofsky’s psychological drama The whale and gets a lot of praise for his work on that picture. He had some interesting things to say about the cancellation Batgirl, in which he would have starred as the Batman villain Firefly. He told Variety that he was “disappointed” with Warner Bros. Discovery’s decision to cancel the project, describing it as “the canary in the coal mine” in an age where streaming services are taking over the industry.
While Doom Patrol Season 4 is sure to get everyone excited, there’s still the question of the supposed spin-off Dead Boy Detectives. In November 2021, Variety reported that Doom Patrol spin off had cast two lead roles in the series and went ahead in pre-production. Then in April 2022, HBO Max gave it a series order, leaving many to believe the show would premiere sometime before the end of the year.
Perhaps recent changes at Warner Bros. Discovery stopped production for the spin-off. Either way, at least it’s nice to hear Doom Patrol Season 4 is underway. The series’ third season premiered on HBO Max on September 23, 2021. Filming for the fourth season began in February 2022.
We’ll see how well Doom Patrol season 4 appears this year, and whether the success or failure motivates those responsible to continue with the series going forward. Now that we know season 4 is coming, and the Harley Quinn the show will go on a little longer, maybe Doom Patrol will get a season 5. On the other hand, it is possible that the rumored sale of Warner Bros. Discovery to Comcast could mean these DC shows will eventually suffer the same fate as Batgirl.
