Ukraine launches counterattack on Snake Island against Russia

On Tuesday, Ukrainian forces launched an attack that officials said dealt a “major” blow to Snake Island in the Black Sea, one of the first Ukrainian positions to fall in the early hours of the Russian invasion.

Ukraine’s Southern Operational Command said late Tuesday that it launched a counterattack by Russian forces on the island, also known as Zmini Island, using “various forces” and “inflicting heavy losses” on Russian forces stationed there, Ukraine’s Ukrenform outlet reported.

The military said it destroyed Russian air defenses and radar systems on the island. It was not clear on Wednesday whether Ukrainian forces had established a foothold on the island or if the counterattack involved only long-range fire.

The strategic outpost in the Black Sea gained notoriety in the early stages of the war, when Ukrainian forces defending the island ordered a pair of Russian warships to “go fast” [themselves]When you are asked to surrender.

Russian forces then bombarded and invaded the island, taking many of the Ukrainian defenders captive.

Tuesday’s attack was part of a larger Ukrainian effort to reclaim territory on the war’s southern front, with Southern Command in Kyiv reporting more than 100 firing missions in the past 24 hours.
