The school says an elementary teacher is accused of sex crimes after posting TikToks to students

A former elementary school teacher in Tennessee is facing more than two dozen charges of pedophilia, including rape, after police said she posted inappropriate videos of students on TikTok.

Taylor Cruz, 23, indicted a grand jury in Smyrna last week as a result of a police investigation into the felony counts, Rutherford County Schools spokesman James Evans told USA TODAY.

Evans said that before her arrest last month, Cruz was a first-year teacher in fifth grade at John Colmon Elementary School in Smyrna, about 25 miles southeast of Nashville.

Evans said she was suspended without pay on May 2, and quit her job on May 22.

Evans did not provide additional details about the case to USA TODAY, including what the TikTok videos contained or when they were posted.

Court records show on August 3 that officials issued an arrest warrant for Cruz, and that the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office arrested her on August 10.

Cruz is charged with multiple counts of electronically exploiting a minor under the age of 13, electronically exploiting a minor, and in particular sexual exploitation of a minor. She also faces accusations of soliciting a minor – child rape, and sexual abuse by an authority figure.

Court documents show that at the time of her arrest, Cruz was living in Murfreesboro, about 14 miles south of the elementary school.

On Wednesday, Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman Lisa Marchesoni told USA TODAY that her current address is listed in Knoxville.

A prison spokesperson told USA TODAY Wednesday that Cruz submitted a $100,000 bond on the same day she was arrested.

Court records show that she will appear in court on September 28 for a hearing.

Evans said the school district continues to “fully cooperate with law enforcement” as the investigation continues.
