The M4 Prince of Wales Bridge fire caused havoc on the M5, M49 and M48 as traffic was suspended and diverted for hours

A truck fire on the M4 Prince of Wales bridge has brought traffic to a standstill. Video footage showed plumes of smoke miles from the bridge after a car caught fire.

Traffic control service Inrix said at 3.21 p.m. today that all traffic was grounded due to a vehicle fire on West Severn Crossing Two from J22 M49 to J23 M48. The car in flames was a truck loaded with pallets of wine.

The accident caused traffic chaos on other roads including the M49 and M32 approaches from Bristol. Queues continue as of 9:30 p.m. although the bridge highway reopens westward.
