The Supreme Court ended the constitutional protections for abortion that had been in place for nearly 50 years in a decision by its conservative majority to overturn Roe v. Wade. Friday’s result is expected to lead to abortion bans in nearly half of the states.
The decision, which would have been unimaginable only a few years ago, was the culmination of decades of efforts by abortion opponents, made possible by the right side of the court that had been immunized by three appointees by former President Donald Trump.
The ruling came more than a month after the stunning leak of Judge Samuel Alito’s draft opinion indicating that the court was ready to take this important step.
That puts the court at odds with the majority of Americans who favored keeping Roe, according to polls.
