SF Giants announce GM hire to replace Scott Harris

A perch that once stood idle for over a year when Farhan Zaidi and Co. searched for the right right hand, wouldn’t stay open long the second time.

The Giants named Pete Putila their new general manager Monday night, filling a position vacated last month when Scott Harris left to take over the Detroit Tigers’ baseball operations.

Putila, 33, has spent the past 12 years in the Houston Astros organization focusing on player development. He was named assistant general manager in 2021 and oversaw all minor- and major-league player development beginning in 2016.

“We are all excited to have Pete join our Baseball Operations leadership team,” Zaidi said in a statement. “Pete has an excellent reputation in the industry as a creative thinker and strong collaborator, and we see him as a seamless fit with our culture of embracing a growth mindset on and off the court. We have prioritized player development up to and including the major leagues, and Pete’s experience and thought leadership in this area will be a tremendous asset as we continue to strengthen our talent pipeline and build a sustainable winner in San Francisco.”

Putila, a native of Carmichaels, Pennsylvania, was reportedly a finalist for the job when Harris was first named GM.

“I am very excited about this opportunity and look forward to working with Farhan and the leadership team,” Putila said in a statement. “I am both humbled and eager to continue building the winning culture our fans expect and deserve.”

He will be introduced along with Zaidi and manager Gabe Kapler at a press conference at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
