Darren Bailey, who was endorsed by former President Trump and backed by billionaire Republican donor Dick Oehlin, will win the GOP nomination for governor of Illinois and face Democratic Governor J.B. Pritzker in November, CNN Projects.

Bailey, in one debate, described Chicago as “a crime-ridden, corrupt, dysfunctional hell,” even though he seeks to become governor of the state of which Chicago is the economic center. In the state legislature in 2019, he sponsored a resolution that would separate Chicago from the rest of Illinois; As a candidate for governor, he has retracted the position.

Trump campaigned with Bailey over the weekend, using a rally with Bailey and Representative Mary Miller to praise the Supreme Court for overturning Roe v. Wade and to criticize the House committee investigating the January 6 rebellion.

“Darren is just the guy who will take on and defeat one of America’s worst rulers,” the former president said at the rally.
