Mick Lynch says rail workers are ‘praised as heroes’ in the pandemic but are now treated as ‘obsolete’

Union president Mick Lynch said the government had praised rail workers as “heroes” during the Covid-19 pandemic, only to treat them as “obsolete”, and the restrictions have now been lifted.

Speaking at BBC One’s question time, the RMT union chief said: “Grant Shapps have hailed us as heroes, they’ve worked all the way through the pandemic, been furloughed, and kept our rail and transport systems going.

“But what they are being told now as a result, is that you are outdated, you are old, in some way the terms and conditions that we have negotiated over many years and we think are a fair deal…”
