Ingratiating has been announced as the final slot holder in the $15m The TAB Everest

Godolphin Australia’s supreme Vin Cox is confident Ingratiating will not let the “Blue Army” down when he lines up in the $15m The TAB Everest at Royal Randwick on Saturday.

Inviting was the surprise selection for the Godolphin game over his high-profile stablemates Paulele and warhorse Kementari.

But Cox said Ingratiating’s fast second-placed finish in the Schillaci Stakes behind Paulele at Caulfield convinced Godolphin he was the right horse for Everest.

“Taking in was brilliant from the start, he’s a horse who has an upwardly mobile profile and his run in the Schillaci Stakes last Saturday was quite outstanding,” Cox said on This Week, Next Week on Sky Thoroughbred Central on Monday night.

“He is a horse that we have always been very excited about from very early days.

“He was one of the elite two-year-olds in his year, placing in the Blue Diamond (second to Artorius) and the Golden Slipper (third to Say Inside). He then won the Vain Stakes (last season) as if he was Vain.

“We’re very excited that the team’s view of the horse and the opinion we’ve had about the horse throughout will be transferred to an Everest slot on Saturday.”

Trainer James Cummings confirmed on Monday night that the highly experienced Glyn Schofield had been booked to ride Ingratiating.

Cummings pointed out that Schofield has ridden more winners for his stable than any other jockey – Schofield has landed 92 winners for the stable followed by Hugh Bowman on 85 and James McDonald on 84.

“Glyn has been riding with a lot of goals and confidence of late, his strike rate is fantastic and he will suit Ingratiating.” Cummings said.

“It can sometimes be a bit slow to clear out of the barriers and Glyn’s patient riding will work well with this horse.”

Ingratiating secured the final starting position in the 12-horse Everest field on Monday and was entered as a $34 chance in the latest TAB Fixed Odds betting behind superstar Nature Strip at $1.90.

Godolphin has previously used the Schillaci Stakes for their Everest runner, with Trekking winning at Caulfield, then backing up a week later to run third behind Ja Ja Ja in the 2019 The Everest.

Cox said Paulele suffered a minor eye injury when winning the Schillaci Stakes, but quickly added though the sprinter was ready to run this Saturday.

“Paulele would have been fine to run, it was one of those things that happens in racing, it was a ‘battle’,” Cox said.

“Our veterinary advice was that he could have run the Everest if we wanted to.

“We know that Paulele is an excellent sprinter and in the same way he would undoubtedly have acquitted himself if we went to Everest.

“But the team is considering going to Manikato (Stakes, Moonee Valley) with Paulele next.”

Cox said Kementari was close to Everest selection but will instead run in the $2 million Sydney Stakes (1200m).

“Kementari, the old warrior we feel is better placed in the Sydney Stakes,” Cox said. “The way it’s worked out, we feel it’s the best way to play our cards.”

In Secret was just beaten by Jacquinot in the Golden Rose last start, but Godolphin has decided to keep the filly for the Group 1 Coolmore Stud Stakes later this month.

“She will have a (barrier) trial at Flemington in the week leading up to the race,” Cox said.

“JMac (James McDonald) was as surprised as anyone when Jacquinot flew home to beat her in the Golden Rose.

“But In Secret is an elite filly, she hasn’t won a Group 1 yet and we’re aiming for Coolmore with her.”
