Great earthquake shook Afghanistan

A powerful earthquake struck Afghanistan, killing more than 1,000 people and injuring at least 1,500.

The 6.1-magnitude event hit the east just after 01:30 on Wednesday (21:00 GMT Tuesday), as people were asleep.

Hundreds of homes were destroyed and helicopters deployed to evacuate the affected people. The ruling Taliban has appealed for international assistance in rescue efforts.
