FINA bans USA swimmer Anita Alvarez from competing after she fainted in a Budapest pool

Anita Alvarez has been banned from the FINA World Aquatics Championships 2022 after she fainted in the pool in Budapest during her routine.

Earlier this week, a Team USA swimmer was rescued from the water by her coach after she fainted and sank down in the technical swimming singles freestyle final.

After her rescue, Alvarez posted on Instagram to notify her followers that she is in good health and hopes to get clearance by the medical staff to participate in the women’s team’s free final on Friday.

But before the final, FINA released a statement declaring that Alvarez should not compete.

“The health and safety of the athletes should come first,” the statement read.

The world’s governing body for water sports said the decision was made after an hour-long meeting between Team USA’s doctor, team captain, president of USA Artistic Swimming, FINA’s CEO and representatives from the FINA Sports Medicine Committee.
