Community outraged after Mississippi teenager shot dead by police

A Mississippi community is outraged after 15-year-old Jaheim McMillan died after being shot by the Gulfport Police Department.

According to court documents obtained by WLOXJaheim McMillan and four other teenagers were approached by a police officer on Thursday, October 6, after a call came in stating that a Kia Soul was driving recklessly, rolled down their window and “knocked them off.”

The documents also say “the caller and his passenger stated they saw the right rear passenger in the Kia Soul brandish a firearm” at a red light and also put on a “camouflage ski mask” and point a gun at them. Eventually, the caller was able to lose the Kia Soul.

Shortly after, police spotted a Kia Soul matching the description made by the caller in the parking lot of a Family Dollar.

According to police, an officer approached an “armed” suspect, McMillan, which led to shots being fired by the officer. McMillan was shot in the head and taken to Memorial Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

Eyewitness gives alleged account of what happened

An eyewitness account of the incident contradicts police reports. A woman named Deborah Stout was recorded saying she did not see McMillan with a gun and his hands were up when he was shot.

I saw the officer shoot the man. I didn’t see a gun on him, she said. He came out of the store with his hands up. I just pulled in and I saw what happened.

Mary Spivery, the mother of Kyion Bell and one of the teenagers in the car with McMillan, said her son told her that McMillan did not have a gun.

I said, ‘So why did they say Jaheim had a gun?’ Spivery said. He said, ‘Mama, Jaheim didn’t have a gun.

The call ended shortly after.

The four friends with McMillan were arrested and charged with two counts of aggravated assault and bail set at $500,000. It is also reported that weapons were also confiscated.

Our condolences to the family.
