Brittney Griner sentenced to 9 years in Russian prison

“I would like to apologize to my team-mates, my club, my fans and the city [Yekaterinburg] for my mistake that I made and the embarrassment that I caused them,” Griner said in his statement. “I also want to apologize to my parents, my siblings, the Phoenix Mercury organization back home, the amazing women of the WNBA and my amazing spouse back home.”

Reacting to her sentence, President Joe Biden criticized Russia for “wrongfully detaining” Griner and said he would “pursue any avenue possible” to bring her home.

“This is unacceptable and I call on Russia to release her immediately so she can be with her wife, loved ones, friends and teammates,” Biden said in a announcement. “My administration will continue to work tirelessly and pursue every avenue possible to bring Brittney and Paul Whelan home safely as soon as possible.”

WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert and NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also released a joint statement condemning the ruling.

“Today’s verdict and sentencing is unjustified and unfortunate, but not unexpected, and Brittney Griner remains wrongfully detained,” they said. “The commitment of the WNBA and the NBA to her safe return has not wavered, and it is our hope that we are nearing the end of this process of finally bringing BG home to the United States.”

Griner previously testified that she used cannabis oil prescribed by her doctor to treat pain from sports injuries, but had packed her bags in a hurry and had no intention of bringing them to Russia, where she was playing in the WNBA offseason. “As they accidentally ended up in my bags, I take responsibility, but I did not intend to smuggle or plan to smuggle [illegal substances] to Russia,” she had testified on July 27.

Griner also complained about that her rights were not read to her when she was first arrested and that she was not given proper translation services during the investigation.

In a letter written to Biden Last month, Griner said she was “terrified” she could be held in a Russian prison forever.

“I realize you’re dealing with so much, but don’t forget about me and the other American prisoners,” she said. “Please do everything you can to bring us home.”

Colas, Griner’s agent, said they appreciated the Biden administration’s efforts to bring the basketball star and Whelan back to the United States.

“Bringing Brittney and Paul home is the sole purpose and as such we should use every tool available,” Colas said. “We must remain focused and united. This is a time for compassion and a shared understanding that getting a deal done to bring Americans home will be difficult, but it is urgent and it is the right thing to do.”
