Brexit news: UK hailed for taking ‘leading role’ in Ukraine and leaving US ‘envy’ | Politics | News

John Bolton, the former White House national security adviser, will make this dramatic admission later today (Tuesday). He will speak at the launch of a new report on Britain’s role in the world after the country’s secession from the European Union. Bolton will cite Britain’s strong military support for Ukraine as evidence that Brexit has restored the country’s space for independent action on the world stage.

A former National Security Adviser to the White House will say: “Britain has played a leading role in the West’s efforts to defeat this aggression and to raise the profile of potential aggressors around the world.

“In many respects, I say with a bit of envy, taking a view that is stronger and more effective than that of the United States.”

The United Kingdom was widely praised for its quick response in helping Ukraine fight Russia in the war.

Since the invasion began on February 24, Britain has pledged more than £1.3 billion in support of Ukraine.

This includes more than 5,000 NLAW anti-tank missiles, long-range multiple launch rocket systems, and artillery systems including 155mm self-propelled guns.

The US has pledged £4.3 billion in security assistance since Joe Biden became president 18 months ago, which includes 6,500 Javelin anti-armor systems, 108 155mm howitzers and 20 Mi-17 helicopters.

The United Kingdom donated about 0.18 percent of its GDP in the field of arms, while the United States provided the equivalent of 0.22 percent.

Last week, Prime Minister Boris Johnson traveled to Ukraine and offered to launch a major training operation for the country’s forces, with the potential to train up to 10,000 soldiers every 120 days.

The orbital operation saw Britain train more than 22,000 Ukrainian personnel from 2015 until the all-out invasion of Ukraine.

But in a big change, the new program will help train troops outside the country.

The presentation came as leaders discussed the situation in Ukraine, and how the country continues to inspire many to act with their courageous resistance.

During his visit to Kyiv, Mr. Johnson said: “My visit today, in the midst of this war, is to send a clear and simple message to the Ukrainian people: The United Kingdom is with you, and we will be with you until you finally prevail.”

“While Ukrainian soldiers fire British missiles in defense of your nation’s sovereignty, they are also doing so in defense of the very freedoms we take for granted.

“That is why I offered President Zelensky a new major military training program that could change the equation of this war – using the strongest of forces, the Ukrainian resolve to win.

“Two months after my last visit, Ukrainian resolve, determination and resilience are stronger than ever, and I know that unbreakable resolve will remain far from the vain ambitions of President Putin.”
