Bolt Creek fire near Skykomish prompts evacuations, road closures – KIRO 7 News Seattle

SKYKOMISH, WASHINGTON – The Bolt Creek fire, which started north of Skykomish early Saturday morning, has grown to nearly 2,000 acres, according to the Washington State Department of Natural Resources.

A level 3 evacuation — meaning leaving now — has been issued to residents north of Highway 2, from Skykomish to Index, according to the King’s County Sheriff’s Office. Specifically, evacuations are taking place from Eagle Falls on the western end to the Pickler River Road in the east.

There is also a level 2 evacuation in place of the indicator, according to the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office. This is an evacuation warning or notice and residents in this area should prepare for the high possibility of an evacuation.

Skykomish level 1 has been cleared, according to Snohomish County Fire District 26.

Evacuations in Levels 1, 2, and 3 are in place for about 300-400 homes, according to the Department of Natural Resources.

State fire aid is mobilized to support local firefighters working to contain the Bolt Creek fire, according to the State Fire Marshal Office.

Packers from the Fire Protection Bureau have ordered 3 strike teams to assist local resources in fighting the fire.

As of 1:50 p.m., staff from the state fire marshal’s office were on their way to the scene to coordinate dispatch of resources.

The fire is currently very active, and wind conditions are making it difficult for crews to put out the flames, according to officials in Snohomish Fire District 26.

The fire started around 5:15 a.m. Saturday in an empty area north of Skykomish and is now moving west. As of 10 a.m., the fire was not in the town of Skykomish, according to King County officials.

Interstate 2 has been closed from Milepost 31.7, about two miles east of Gold Bar, to Milepost 49, at the eastern end of Skykomish, according to the Washington State Department of Transportation.

Residents who need to leave the area will still have access to the road.

Drivers are advised to turn well ahead of the shutdowns and to expect heavier-than-normal traffic on other interstate highways, including Interstate 90 and State Route 20, while responding to the wildfires.

Smoke and ash from the fire stream west toward Snohomish and King counties. All counties in Washington are currently under some form of burn ban, as stormy conditions and warm weather raise fire fears.
