Adam Doueihi sent off, Grant Atkins, Robbie Farah, Lebanon vs New Zealand

Lebanon five-eighth Adam Doueihi was sensationally sent off after an altercation with referee Grant Atkins involving coach Robbie Farah in their 34-12 loss to New Zealand.

In the 59th minute of Lebanon’s World Cup opener against the Kiwis, Atkins Doueihi was marched off after he and Robbie Farah allegedly exchanged words with the referee.

Andrew Voss summed up the confusion surrounding the bizarre broadcast in the comments section.

“I think coach Robbie Farah has been sent off here,” Voss said. “Robbie Farah has been sent off by referee Atkins.

“It’s interesting, Adam Doueihi is on the sidelines. What’s happened here?

“Doueihi has been expelled. Adam Doueihi is off so there is some drama here for Lebanon and they are down a man now.

“It seemed like a very frustrated referee Grant Atkins there.

“Was it a disagreement? You can only imagine he got both barrels from both player and coach, I’m not sure.”

Moments later after the Kiwis scored, Voss confirmed the reason for the bizarre sending off.

“Confirmation that it was disagreement from Adam Doueihi,” Voss said.

“I just wonder about the circumstances of it. It was a short kick-off and the game just had to go on, but Grant Atkins responded.

“That must have been pretty yummy.”

Lebanon stunned the Kiwis early, opening the scoring for the Cedars after just a minute of play, pouncing on a ball after deflecting a teasing Mitchell Moses grubber.

Skipper Jesse Bromwich chugged through and touched down in quick response for the Kiwis, whose only World Cup title came in 2008 at the expense of all-conquering Australia.

New Zealand added first-half tries through Nelson Asofa-Solomona and Peta Hiku, with all three converted by Jordan Rapana.

But Lebanon came out firing in the second period, ran through their set with patience and eventually saw Wigan winger Abbas Miski tap one-handed into the corner.

Moses, fresh from a losing NRL Grand Final appearance with the Parramatta Eels, was successful with the touchline conversion.

Rapana blew away a potential Lebanese try after a clever Mansour cross and immediately the Kiwis countered, Manu accelerating into space up the box and finding Dylan Brown on the inside for a welcome try.

Manu then turned the game on its head, the Sydney Roosters back collecting his own audacious chip from dummy-half, spinning past a first defender and fending off three more for a superb individual try.

Lebanon were dealt a further blow when playmaker Adam Doueihi was sent off for dissent just minutes later and from the restart the Kiwis sealed victory as Rapana stepped back through some weak defending for his side’s sixth try following a looping Manu pass.
