Abortion rights protesters show up ahead of the Roevember midterm elections in the US

With one month until the 2022 US midterm elections, abortion rights supporters rallied across the country on Saturday to highlight the gravity of the issues at stake.

Control of the Senate and the House, both currently in the hands of Democrats, are considered to be at stake — and with it the future of reproductive health care in America.

Republican lawmakers have taken increasingly hard attitudes against abortion in the wake of the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade this summer. This The decision from 1973 made abortion legal throughout the country.

Some states, such as Texas and Oklahoma, now do not even allow abortion in cases of rape or incest; exceptions to their abortion ban can only be made in very limited circumstances to save the life of the pregnant woman.

Criminal penalties in some states mean doctors can risk their freedom and livelihood if they perform an abortion in a case that doesn’t comply with lawmakers’ restrictions.
