The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended membership invitations to 397 film artists from 54 different countries. Among those invited, 15 Academy Award winners including Ariana Debus (West side story), Troy Kotsur (coda) And the winners for the original song are Billie Eilish and her brother Phineas O’Connell (No time to die.)

Academy Awards are awarded based on the votes of Academy members.

The academy has been trying to diversify its membership in recent years. Of this year’s group of invitees, 44% are women, 37% are from what the group calls “racial and racially underrepresented communities,” and 50% are from countries or territories outside the United States.

If all 397 accepted their invitations, the academy’s total membership would be 34% of women and 19% of underrepresented groups.

According to the Academy, “The membership process is by sponsorship, not application. Candidates must be sponsored by two members of the Academy from the branch in which the candidate is seeking admission.”
